Voice capacity of IEEE 802.11b WLANs

چکیده
There is a tremendous growth in the deployment and usage of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) in recent years. There is also an increasing interest in supporting voice applications over WLANs. In this paper we use analytical models presented in the literature for saturation throughput, average packet delay and packet drop probability and simulative results for jitter to evaluate voice traffic over WLANs. We propose a methodology that determines the voice capacity of WLANs and we examine the effect of packetization interval and transmission rate on voice capacity using G.711 codec. Analytical results for voice capacity match simulative results presented in the literature using extensive simulations.

Admission control for VoIP and data traffic in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
This paper presents an novel analytical model for calculation of throughput of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) under variable packet length assuming ideal channel conditions. The proposed model considers basic access scheme but can be easily applied to RTS/CTS reservation scheme. Moreover, we use this model to present a simple algorithm to compute the voice capacity of a...
متن کاملVoIP over Multiple IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs
IEEE 802.11 WLAN has high data rate (e.g., 11Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11g) while voice stream of VoIP has low data rate requirement (e.g., 29.2Kbps). One may therefore expect WLAN to be able to support a large number of VoIP sessions (e.g., 200 and 900 sessions in 802.11b and 802.11g, respectively). Prior work by one of the authors, however, indicated that 802.11 is extremely ineffic...
متن کاملComparison of QoS Guarantee Techniques for VoIP over IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN
An emerging killer application for enterprise wireless LANs (WLANs) is voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, which promises to greatly improve the reachability and mobility of enterprise telephony service at low cost. None of the commercial IEEE 802.11 WLAN-based VoIP products can support more than ten G.729-quality voice conversations over a single IEEE 802.11b channel on real-world WLANs, even thou...
متن کاملVoice over IEEE 802.11b Capacity
In this paper, we study the VoIP capacity of IEEE 802.11b (DCF), i.e., the maximum number of simultaneous voice calls that can take place in a WLAN cell. This capacity is highly dependent on the chosen codec and on the distance from the access point (AP) to the users. Thus several codecs are studied, namely G711, GSM-EFR, and G723.1. All users are assumed to be at a fixed distance from the AP. ...
متن کاملCo-existence of Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b WLANs: results from a radio network testbed
Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b WLANs will complement each other in the field of personal usage: While Bluetooth provides wireless connectivity in the personal area, IEEE 802.11b provides wireless access to local area networks. Because both technologies operate in the same frequency band co-existence studies are necessary. This report presents results from a co-existence testbed that give a detailed...
